You've got an LPG leak, almost certainly at the connection you made when you swapped the bottle yesterday.
Right now
- Shut the valve on the bottle itself, at the gas locker, right now. Also shut the solenoid and the galley isolation valve.
- No sparks. Don't switch anything electrical on or off in the galley or near the bilge, don't start the engine, no smoking, no lighters.
- Open every hatch, port and locker. Propane is heavier than air and pools in the bilge, so lift floorboards and get air moving low down.
Stop and call someone if
You can still smell gas after the bottle is shut and the boat has been aired. That means gas is already pooled low down, or the bottle valve itself is leaking.
Trimmed to fit the page. Members get the full answer, with the get-you-home fix, the proper fix and the part to look for.
Everything we use, in one place.
The Boat Doctor
Say what's wrong and where you are. Get what to do first, how to isolate it, a get-you-home fix, the proper fix and the part to look for.
The passage planner
Type where from and where to, with any stops. Get the route, arrival times, diesel, water and Starlink data for your boat, and a plan to print.
Your boat on paper
A departure checklist and ship's SOP written from your own gear, and a maintenance log that keeps the receipts.
The community
The Friday Noon Sight, threads on buying, Cat 1 and the Fiji run, crew finder, boats and gear for sale, and short courses.
Plus our books and packs, readable inside the club. The guides and free tools stay free on matori.com.au.

When we were going through listings we couldn't tell which ones were a bargain and which ones were a bill we hadn't spotted yet, and everyone we asked was trying to sell us something. Hence why this place exists.Kyle, skipper of Mā Tori

Before you click.
Do I need a card to start?
No. The 30 days are free with no card. Add one at the end to keep going at USD 24 a month, or do nothing and it pauses.
I haven't got a boat yet. Is this for me?
Yes. Buying a catamaran, the survey, NZ Cat 1 and the Fiji run are what the room talks about most. The tools use a typical 40 foot cat until you fill in My boat, then they use your numbers.
Is it just for catamaran owners?
We sail a catamaran, so the buying threads and the defaults lean that way. The Doctor and the planner work from your own boat's numbers, and the departure checklist has a monohull setting.
Is the Boat Doctor AI?
Yes. It's an AI model set up to answer the way a ship's engineer would: make it safe first, then get you home, then the proper fix. The Doctor demo on this page shows real answers from it.
How good is the Boat Doctor?
It's a second opinion, and it can be wrong. It tells you what to do first, how to isolate the problem, the temporary fix, the proper fix and the part to look for, and it says when to stop and call someone. It doesn't replace a qualified tech on anything that can sink or burn the boat.
How many Boat Doctor answers do I get?
Sloop members get 5 a day and 30 a month. A question the Doctor asks you back doesn't use one up.
How do I cancel?
Any time, from your billing page. Do nothing at the end of the 30 days and it pauses, so there's nothing to cancel.
Is there a bigger plan?
Yacht is USD 75 a month with a bigger Doctor allowance. You can change plan from your billing page whenever you like.
